We Belong

For We Belong, we engaged with students and staff at the Washington School for the Deaf. This project highlights the transformational experience many students have as it is the first time they are immersed in an all-Deaf environment engaging with fellow students and teachers with shared lived experiences.  We asked them to create messages to future students. To capture the messages students performed their signs while wearing custom-made light gloves during a long exposure photograph. The 128 photographs are used as reference to create three suspending glass sculptures in the main hall of the new building. The three sculptures visuals the messages “You are important,” “We can do anything,” and “Deaf pride.” The addition of a book for the school’s library that includes every students’ message captured, is a legacy piece that grants the school to take ownership of the project and develop the continuation of the artwork.
